Mother, two adult children escape from Edgewood house fire

EDGEWOOD, MD—Crews responded to a house fire in the Edgewood area on Tuesday.

The blaze broke out at just after 5:30 p.m. on May 20, 2025 in the 3000-block of Ebbtide Drive.

A mother and her two adult children were home when a smoke alarm activated, and one of them discovered smoke coming from a bedroom. They attempted to extinguish the fire with a pot of water; however, the fire grew beyond their control.  They were able to escape, call 9-1-1, and then rescue their dog from inside.

Investigators have determined that two open bedroom windows allowed the fire to spread quickly, breaching the windows and extending into the attic of the home.

Firefighters were able to quickly control the fast-moving fire before it spread to neighboring homes.

The fire caused approximately $500,000 in damage and was caused by an unattended candle/incense, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.  It took 37 firefighters around 15 minutes to control the flames.

No injuries were reported.  Harford County Disaster Assistance is assisting the residents.
