TOWSON, MD—Baltimore County Public Schools held its 50th Annual Career and Technical Education (CTE) Student Recognition Ceremony on May 1 at Towson University’s SECU Arena. The program was live-streamed and is available for online viewing. During the ceremony, 163 seniors – one student from each CTE program at each high school – were recognized as exemplary students.
Five students, one from each of the county’s geographical areas, were recognized with annual Anthony G. Marchione Awards for Excellence in CTE. Recipients of the honor, which comes with a $1,000 prize for each student, are selected based on career program success, community involvement, and employer or teacher reference. The 2024 award winners are:
Central Area– Megan Taylor, Dulaney High School
A participant in Dulaney’s Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning program and the Apprenticeship Maryland Program, Taylor apprenticed at Advanced Indoor Resources, LLC. Taylor is president of her school’s Skills USA organization. Her goal is to earn a master’s license in HVAC through the Associated Builders and Contractors registered apprenticeship program.
Southeast Area – Gurvansh Singh, Dundalk High School
Through Dundalk’s P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School) program, Singh has completed college courses in civil engineering and organized tours for and mentored new P-TECH students. The aspiring engineering professor will intern this summer with Whiting-Turner, KCI Technologies, or RK and K.
Southwest Area – Hamna Hareem, Lansdowne High School
Hareem rose to the level of battalion commander in Lansdowne High’s Army JROTC program. She seeks to transfer the character and leadership skills gained through JROTC into a career in business or management.
Northeast Area – Kira Linville, Eastern Technical High School
Linville participated in the Teacher Academy of Maryland program at Eastern Tech and interned at Bear Creek Elementary School. The aspiring elementary school teacher also mentored elementary school students and participated in the Educators Rising group.
Northwest Area – Tegan Hakim, Pikesville High School
Hakim studied Information Technology: Computer Science at Pikesville and is completing an associate degree at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). His internship supervisors at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab said he successfully completed advanced professional tasks. In addition, Hakim cofounded a business and authored a chapter in an educational technologies textbook.

The event’s keynote speaker was Craig Carmichael, president of Northwest Hospital and senior vice president and chief operating officer of LifeBridge Health. His remarks included recounting how Tedric Bushrod, an Academy of Health Professions senior at Randallstown High, helped save a life while apprenticing at Northwest Hospital. Other speakers included Renee Maforo, a BCPS/CTE graduate; Tiara Booker-Dwyer, Board of Education chair; Dr. Melissa DiDonato, chief academic officer; Jaylaan Stubbs, Academy of Health Professions student at Randallstown High; Dr. Michael Grubbs, CTE coordinator; Sherri Fisher, director of CTE & Fine Arts; and Cindy Jones, chair of the Career and Technical Education Advisory Council. Reflections were offered by students Hunter Lewis, Aviation Technology, Hereford High School; Mario Alvarado, Apprenticeship Maryland, Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts; Tegan Hakim, Information Technology: Computer Science and Project Lead The Way Engineering, Pikesville High School; and Rain Holt, P-TECH, Owings Mills High School. In addition, Hailey Brennan, a BCPS graduate and energy engineer at Spectrum Energy, LLC, also spoke.
The ceremony was hosted by the CTE Advisory Council in conjunction with the Office of CTE and in partnership with The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools.
