BALTIMORE, MD—The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday released state jobs and unemployment data.
According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland’s total jobs decreased by 4,800 and the unemployment rate increased to 1.8% in November.
Sectors that created jobs include: Financial Activities (800); Information (500); Mining, Logging, and Construction (500); and the Public sector (400).
Sectors that experienced a decline include: Professional and Business Services (2,600); Leisure and Hospitality (1,600); Private Education and Health (1,000); Other Services (900); Manufacturing (700); and Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (200).
The preliminary jobs estimate in October 2023 was revised upward by 2,900 jobs: from a loss of 11,100 to a decline of 8,200 jobs. Maryland’s unemployment rate remains near record lows. Although employment estimates can fluctuate from month to month, Maryland’s growth rate for total nonfarm employment over the past six months has matched the national rate at 0.7%.
