TOWSON, MD—The Baltimore County Department of Aging is calling on residents to help combat social isolation among older adults by participating in “No Senior Eats Alone Day” on Thursday, Sept. 11.
For the seventh year, the department is raising awareness about the health risks of loneliness, which research has shown to be as damaging as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
“We all have a role in preventing loneliness and creating meaningful social connections,” said BCDA Director Heang K. Tan. “On No Senior Eats Alone Day, we’re asking neighbors, families, and community partners to reach out to older adults. Sharing a meal is a simple act that reminds people they are seen, valued, and part of our community.”
As part of the initiative, all 21 of the county’s senior centers will open their doors to all older adults for special lunches. Some will also host breakfast and dinner gatherings. Residents can find information on how to participate by contacting their local senior center or the Nutrition Office at 410-887-3052.
Additionally, a number of restaurants, community associations and housing organizations are offering special meals and events to support the day. A full list of participating partners is available on the Baltimore County government website.
To reach homebound seniors, volunteers from the Baltimore County Fire and Police Departments will deliver meals and visit with residents. The BCDA is also collaborating with Meals on Wheels to invite home-delivered meal recipients to a virtual lunch through its online senior center, OPAL.
Residents can highlight their efforts on social media using the hashtag #NoSeniorEatsAloneDay.
