TOWSON, MD—Many of Baltimore County Public Schools’ best student artists were honored for their work and talent during a June 5 reception and awards ceremony for BCPS’ 37th Annual High School Art Exhibition. The juried exhibition featured ­­the work of 112 student artists from across the county.

Following the ceremony at The StarTUp at Towson University, 307 Washington Ave., Towson 21204, the student artwork will be on display from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Fridays, through Monday, June 30. Once this exhibition has completed at The StarTUp, selected artworks will travel to other venues for up to a year.

“The 37th Annual High School Art Exhibition highlights the unwavering dedication and creativity of BCPS students and their art educators, showcasing BCPS’ steadfast support for a robust, culturally responsive visual arts education,” said Ryan Twentey, coordinator of the BCPS Office of Visual Arts. “We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who nurture our outstanding young artists, including teachers, parents, caregivers, mentors, and community partners.”

Sherri Fisher, director of the BCPS Office of Integrated Arts, noted that the average art teacher in our school system teaches 22,500 students over the course of a 30-year career and therefore has a tremendous impact on the community.

Twentey thanked Towson University for its continued partnership and allowing BCPS to display art at The StarTUp; Azrael, Franz, Schwab, Lipowitz & Solter, LLC, for awarding monetary prizes to student artists for more than a dozen years and for displaying student work in its offices year-round; the Baltimore Watercolor Society for awarding monetary prizes and free memberships to student artists for the past several years; Sheffield for offering scholarships; Plaza Artist Materials for providing prize packs; Hannah’s Café for supporting the visual arts by catering events and receptions; BCPS Copy and Print Services for printing the artbook; and the BCPS Department of Facilities Management for carefully transporting the artworks.

• Best Other Media – Micah Cobaria, Perry Hall High School, “Bedroom Pop”

• Best Digital Media – Liam Kleinschmidt, Carver Center, “Coyote Walking”
• Best 3D Artwork – Tiffany Chuks-Okpara, Owings Mills High School, “Octo Eye”
• Best Photograph – Mairi Mulloney, Hereford High School, “Seeing Red”

• Best Painting – Jackson Argis, George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology, “Hickey”

• Best Drawing – Olivia Jenkins, Catonsville High School, “Knitting”
