BCPS educator named one of 25 outstanding technology and engineering teachers in the nation

BALTIMORE, MD—A teacher at Western School of Technology and Environmental Science has been recognized as one of the nation’s top technology and engineering educators.

James Renaud was recently honored with a Teacher Excellence Award by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) at its 87th Annual Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. Renaud was selected for his innovative teaching methods, his dedication to student success, and his ability to incorporate real-world applications into his curriculum. “Mr. Renaud empowers his students to think critically, solve problems creatively, and develop the technical and collaborative skills necessary for future success,” said Western Tech Principal Jewell M. Ralph.

The ITEEA Teacher Excellence Award, sponsored by ITEEA and Goodheart-Willcox, is a prestigious honor that recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of technology and engineering education. The award provides public recognition at the local, state, and international levels. The award recipients are chosen as models for their colleagues and for their potential to lead change in the field.

Before teaching, Renaud was a civil engineer for 20 years. He brings his extensive experience to Western Tech, where he not only teaches but also serves as the Engineering Club advisor, the Day with an Engineer liaison, and the University of Maryland Outreach coordinator. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and Villanova University, respectively, and a master’s degree in teaching from Loyola University Maryland.

“Reviewing this impressive list of award recipients highlights the excellence in technology and engineering education across our nation,” said ITEEA Awards Chair Byron McKay. “These distinguished educators provide valuable models for enhancing our own teaching methods. Additionally, professional connection with such accomplished colleagues brings meaningful recognition within our academic community.”
