Maryland among states people are leaving the most, study

BALTIMORE, MD—People are leaving Maryland in droves, a new study finds.

A recent study by Rocket Moving analyzed all 50 U.S. states to identify the ones people want to move from the most. The study takes into account international and domestic migration as well as happiness score, quality of life, cost of living and average rent. All the initial data was taken from reports by the U.S. Census and World Population Review.

Maryland is eighth in the country, with 268 people moving from the state per 100,000 people. The state has a high cost of living and lower quality of life, but safety is better than in California and New York.

The state people want to move from the most is New York, with 989 people moving from the state per 100,000 residents. The state ranks first in quality of life among all U.S. states but also has the highest rent at $3,400 on average. Despite attracting more international migrants, New York has experienced a net domestic population loss of over 882,000 in the past three years.

California is second in the ranking of the U.S. states people want to move from the most, with 658 movers per capita. The state has a high happiness index, but the prices are the most difficult for residents to handle. California has the third highest cost of living in the ranking and an average rent of $3,000.
