Congestion relief project continues on I-695, lane closures expected

BALTIMORE, MD—Motorists traveling on I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) should expect intermittent lane closures in both directions between I-70 and the Stevenson Road overpass beginning Monday, October 14th.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) announced that the lane closures will be in effect during daytime off-peak hours as part of a project to improve reliability and reduce congestion.

The work will primarily focus on the median of I-695 between I-70 and MD 43 (White Marsh Boulevard). Crews will be adding highway drainage systems, power and communications conduit, and installing overhead lane marker gantries. This project aims to improve the overall flow of traffic on the busy Beltway.

Motorists should anticipate heavy traffic during off-peak daytime hours, particularly on the west and north sides of I-695. The MDOT SHA advises drivers to allow for extra travel time.

To manage the flow of traffic and ensure worker safety, variable speed limit signs and automated speed enforcement will be in operation. Motorists are urged to be attentive to these variable speed limit signs, as speeds may be reduced even when there are no active lane closures.

Lane closures are expected to continue through spring 2025, weather permitting.
