COLD CASE: Police seek tips on 1985 murder of senior citizen in Middle River

MIDDLE RIVER, MD—Police are seeking tips on a nearly 40-year-old cold case homicide in Middle River.

On the morning of March 22, 1985, Margaret Hughes’ daughter-in-law called to check on her mother like she did every morning. When she got no answer on the phone, she drove to Margaret’s house located in the 1900-block of Leland Avenue in Middle River. There, Margaret was found dead in an upstairs bedroom of the house. An autopsy determined that Margaret had sustained numerous injuries and her death was ruled a homicide.

Margaret was 88 years old when she was murdered. She was still active and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. She had recently returned from a trip to Atlantic City with a friend and she liked to play BINGO at the Essex Senior Center.
