Maryland man ‘set for retirement’ after scoring $5 million scratch-off prize

BALTIMORE, MD—A Maryland man is set for retirement after winning $5 million on a lottery scratch-off.

The Dorchester County resident discovered a $5 million, top prize-winning scratch-off in the 50 Years! game. The lucky winner stopped by Maryland Lottery headquarters with his wife on Monday to claim his big prize.

“We are very grateful for this win,” said the Eastern Shore man.

The 50 Years! game, which arrived in stores with three $5 million top prizes on February 20, 2023, was part of the Maryland Lottery’s 50th anniversary celebration. The first top-prize winner hailed from New Carrollton. A super fan of the $50 scratch-off, the winner said it is the only Maryland Lottery game he currently plays. He’s been on a hot streak, too, winning $100, $200, and $10,000 on different 50 Years! instant tickets.

The loyal player caught the big prize when he visited Dash In, located at 7201 Main Street in Worcester County last Thursday. He purchased three 50 Years! instant tickets that day. He won $75 on the first scratch-off, had no luck on the second instant ticket, and found the game’s second $5 million top prize on the third scratch-off.

“I am now set for retirement,” the happy winner said with a big smile.

The 56-year-old is a small business owner on the Eastern Shore in Maryland and Delaware. He worked for the company for decades before transitioning to ownership eight years ago.

Although he was thinking about retiring after his win, the lucky winner said he decided to stay with his company.

“At first, I said ‘I’m done,’ but we have been too dedicated to this company for 30 years to walk away,” he explained.
