ANNAPOLIS, MD—This week, Governor Wes Moore delivered remarks at the Greater Baltimore Committee’s 2023 Transportation and Economic Opportunity Summit. Under the theme “Connecting Our Region, Revitalizing Our Core,” business leaders and community leaders gathered at the Baltimore Convention Center to discuss regional connectivity, and redevelopment and revitalization opportunities in Baltimore City.
“You cannot have a thriving state if the state’s largest city isn’t thriving. This is going to be Maryland’s decade; and I know that for this to be Maryland’s decade, it has to be Baltimore’s time,” said Gov. Moore. “In the first ten months of our administration, we’ve shown that in partnership, progress is possible. I know that if we can give this moment everything we’ve got, there’s nothing that can or will stop us.”
The Greater Baltimore Committee’s work fosters dialogue about critical issues facing Baltimore City to create a stronger and more prosperous Baltimore region. During his remarks, Governor Moore highlighted the changes taking place in Baltimore and throughout the state of Maryland, discussing the role that the city plays in the state’s economic landscape and its potential to redefine itself for generations to come.
Officials say support for transportation and infrastructure projects are key to the Moore-Miller Administration’s commitment to unlocking the economic success of Baltimore City.
In January, Governor Moore celebrated the kickoff of the B&P Tunnel Replacement Program in Baltimore. Now named the Frederick Douglass Tunnel, the state will invest $450 million to support this major infrastructure project, which will generate up to 30,000 jobs in the Baltimore region, including 20,000 construction jobs.
Governor Moore also announced the relaunch of the Baltimore Red Line, a major investment in transit to significantly enhance east-west connectivity across the Baltimore region. Shaped by more than ten years of study, engineering, environmental analysis, and substantial community participation, the relaunch of the Red Line project aims to improve transit efficiency, increase access to work and activity centers, provide connections to existing transit and other transportation modes, offer more commuter choices, and support economic development and community revitalization.
Earlier this month, the governor announced that the Maryland Department of Transportation received two grants totaling $20.4 million to advance transit rail connections in the Baltimore region and promote cleaner operations at the Port of Baltimore. Both grants were awarded through the Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program. The funding will help improve MARC reliability and deliver cleaner air for communities near the Port of Baltimore.
