36-year-old killed in fatal Essex crash

ESSEX, MD—Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred on Monday evening in Baltimore County.

The victim is identified as Alexander Lewis, 36, of Baltimore. Lewis was pronounced deceased at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. He was the driver and sole occupant of a Ford Focus involved in the crash. There were no other injuries reported at the scene.

At just after 8 p.m. on July 17, 2023, troopers responded to the report of a single-vehicle crash on outer loop I-695 prior to Route 702 (Southeast Boulevard). According to a preliminary investigation, a Ford Focus was traveling north on I-695 when for unknown reasons, traveled off the roadway and crashed into a tree.

Two lanes were closed on the outer loop for more than 2 hours following the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
