Lightning strike causes two-alarm fire in Bel Air, two pets missing

BEL AIR, MD—A team of Deputy State Fire Marshals has concluded that lightning was the cause for a two-alarm fire that displaced 26 residents of Taylor Ridge condominiums in Bel Air after strong thunderstorms hit the area on Monday evening.

At just before 9:30 p.m. on June 26, 2023, the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company was called to 1311 Sheridan Place for a carbon monoxide detector alarm. Additional 9-1-1 callers reported seeing flames coming from the roof, causing the fire to be quickly upgraded to two alarms. It took 75 firefighters from multiple departments around 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. Harford County Department of Inspections, Licenses, and Permits temporarily condemned 1309 Sheridan Place, displacing around 20 people until a more detailed inspection can be conducted, while inspectors and investigators consider 1311 a total loss.

Investigators confirmed lightning struck the roof of the building, which immediately ignited the roof as well as the attic of the building. Residents reported hearing lightning strike the building and smelled smoke minutes later. Everyone inside the building was able to escape after notifying each other, as well as the activation of a fire alarm. The fire caused the roof to collapse into the third floor, causing portions of the other floors to collapse into each other. The first floor sustained extensive water damage. While the building was equipped with sprinklers, the fire originated above the level of their protection features.

Deputy State Fire Marshals remained on the scene throughout the night and into the early morning hours, interviewing and attempting to make contact with each resident. EMS evaluated one person and declined transport but later drove to the hospital. Firefighters attempted to look for two cats that were reported missing and were unsuccessful in locating the pets.

Friends, family, and Harford County Disaster Assistance are assisting those displaced.
