Maryland gas tax set to increase on July 1

BALTIMORE, MD—Drivers in Maryland should be prepared to pay a little bit more for gas next month.

The state’s gas tax will increase to $0.47 per gallon on July 1, 2023, according to the state comptroller’s website.  This will mark an increase of more the 10% and the gas tax rate has increased by 30% over the past two years.

The state tax on diesel fuel will increase from ~43.5 cents per gallon to almost 47.8 cents per gallon on July 1st.

Revenue from the state’s gas tax is utilized fund statewide road and highway projects.

Maryland will have the fourth-highest gas tax in the nation, behind only California, Pennsylvania, and Washington state.

In March, Governor Wes Moore (D) announced that all vehicle sales in the state of Maryland would need to be electric by 2035.
