TOWSON, MD—Councilwoman Cathy Bevins’ Bill No. 52-19 passed through the Baltimore County Council’s legislative session on Monday evening, November 4, 2019.
The passage of this legislation allows alternative uses and development proposals adjacent to the MD-43 Overlay District.
Construction for a sports complex off of Campbell Boulevard will now begin in Middle River.
The sports complex will have an aquatic center, three pools, three turf fields, a ropes course, an indoor recreation center featuring a track, a yoga studio, and a climbing center.
“It is exciting that an investment this large is coming to Eastern Baltimore County,” said Bevins. “For many years families have had to travel outside of the district, and this is an opportunity for people to come from other areas to see what Middle River has to offer.”
St. John Properties is responsible for the development of the new sports complex.
The project is to be named after Mike Caruthers, a developer who was working on the project before his passing this past August.
The development of the sports complex was endorsed by the Essex-Middle River Civic Council, which represents 23 communities and The Middle River Roundtable.
“This is an opportunity to have something really extraordinary for the Middle River area,” Bevins added.
The Mike Caruthers Fields at Greenleigh project is located on 62 acres of land on Campbell Boulevard in Middle River.
