Police are investigating a fatal crash on MD 702 in Essex that occurred at just before 9 p.m. on Saturday night.

Authorities say a Hyundai Tucson traveling westbound on MD 702 near the exit to I-695 failed to negotiate a right curve in the roadway.  The vehicle crossed the grass median and the eastbound travel lanes.  It then traveled down an embankment and struck a tree.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Shannon Michele Kraft, 30, of the 3700-block of White Pine Road (21220), was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center where she later died. An adult male passenger was also taken to an area hospital and remains in critical but stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing at this hour.
