NOTTINGHAM, MD—Baltimore County Councilman David Marks on Tuesday announced that he has introduced legislation that would allow for manned donation sites at larger shopping areas, a way to reduce dumping throughout the community.

Under Marks’ bill, companies such as GreenDrop would be allowed to locate in larger shopping areas. Unlike traditional donation bins which are unmanned and often accumulate piles of donations, GreenDrop has a system in which employees collect contributions that are often provided to charities such as the American Red Cross, Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the National Federation of the Blind. Right now, such sites are only located in one area of eastern Baltimore County.

“Unmanned donation bins sometimes accumulate piles of donated bags that take weeks to be removed,” said Councilman Marks. “GreenDrop and similar companies man their stations, and the donations go to established charitable organizations. This legislation encourages the recycling of household items and will hopefully reduce dumping.”

Councilman Marks’ legislation will be voted on by the Baltimore County Council on Thursday, May 27th.
