WEEKLY ZIP CODE REPORT: Maryland COVID-19 hospitalizations increase as mortality rates continue to drop

NOTTINGHAM, MD—The Maryland Department of Health on Friday reported that COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state ticked higher over the past week as statewide mortality rates continued to fall.

Overall Metrics

As of Friday, October 9, 2020, there have been 130,159 cases of novel coronavirus in Maryland. The state has now conducted 2,829,843 tests.

The statewide positivity rate stands at 2.87%, a slight decrease from last Friday’s 2.93%.

There have been 3,845 related deaths and 391 individual are currently hospitalized – an increase of 68 hospitalizations since last Friday.  A total of 96 ICU beds are currently in use, an increase of 16 beds since last Friday.

Approximately 70% of Maryland’s COVID-19 fatalities have been among those over 70 years of age (2,695/3,845), as seen in the chart below from the Maryland Department of Health.

Thus far, the survival rate for coronavirus in Maryland remains above 98% for those residents under 60 years of age.

There have now been 1,577,208 negative COVID-19 test results in Maryland and 7,704 patients have been released from isolation.

Baltimore County has confirmed 18,792 COVID-19 cases and and 619 deaths (note: “probable” deaths are not included in these totals).
