BALTIMORE, MD—The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data on Friday. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 29,800 jobs in May and the unemployment rate decreased to 9.9% (April’s unemployment rate was later revised to 10.1%).
The Education and Health Services sector experienced the most growth with an increase of 9,300 jobs. The Professional and Business Services sector increased by 9,000 jobs from the Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation (7,600) and the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (1,700) subsectors. This growth was offset by a decrease of 300 jobs from the Management of Companies and Enterprises subsector.
Other sectors that experienced growth include: Leisure and Hospitality (5,500); Mining, Logging, and Construction (4,900); Manufacturing (3,700); Financial Activities (3,600); Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (500); and Other Services (100).
The Information sector decreased by 1,100 jobs.
