Armed man surrenders to police in Essex barricade

A barricade situation in Essex has ended peacefully.

Just before 11 a.m. this morning, officers responded to the 2100 block of Anthony Ave 21221 for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived on the scene they spoke with a man who told them that he had been in an altercation with the suspect. During the altercation, the suspect fired several shots from a gun at him. The man was not hit by the gunfire.

At first, officers feared that the man was armed and walking around the neighborhood. They then determined that he was in a home by himself.

Specialized resources were called to the scene to ensure the safety of the community. Police negotiators began a dialogue with the suspect and requested that he give himself up peacefully. The suspect eventually complied with the request of negotiators and surrendered peacefully to police.

The suspect was transported to a hospital for an evaluation. He also faces charges in connection with the alleged assault. His information will be released after he is officially charged.

The assault incident remains under investigation by the Precinct 11 Investigative Services Team.

Police were on the scene of an incident involving an armed person in Essex on Wednesday afternoon.

At around noon, officers responded to the area of Anthony Avenue and Greyhound Road, 21221, for a report of a possible armed subject.

Police tweeted that they believed the man was by himself and armed in a home on Anthony Avenue.

At about 2:45 p.m., police said that, after negotiations, the man had surrendered peacefully to police.  He will taken for an evaluation.
