Haifa Smoked Fish recalls smoked salmon, seabass over Listeria concerns

WASHINGTON—Haifa Smoked Fish is recalling two of its smoked fish products, “Cold Smoked Salmon” and “Cold Smoked Seabass,” due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.

The recall, announced this week by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), affects 8-ounce packages of “COLD SMOKED SALMON,” with lot number 219, and “COLD SMOKED SEABASS,” with lot number 212. Both products were distributed nationwide to retail stores and distributors.

The contamination was discovered after routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Subsequent analysis by food laboratory personnel confirmed the presence of Listeria in the products.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the recall.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are advised not to eat them and should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
