BALTIMORE, MD—A new study from a crypto exchange platform claims Marylanders are deluged with spam calls, ranking the state fifth in the nation for the number of unwanted calls per capita over the past five years.

According to Chicksx.com, residents in Maryland received an estimated 6,083 spam calls per 100,000 residents between 2020 and 2024, a rate 39% higher than the national average.

The study, which the crypto exchange said was based on more than 16 million reported cases from the Federal Trade Commission’s Do Not Call Registry, asserts that Maryland’s economic activity and high connectivity contribute to its high ranking. While Maryland’s total of 380,973 reported calls places it fifth, the state has seen a significant decrease, with yearly totals dropping from 99,417 in 2020 to 41,831 in 2024.

Delaware topped the list with a rate of 6,521 calls per 100,000 people. It was followed by Ohio, Arizona and Virginia, which completed the top five.

North Dakota, Alaska and Mississippi were the states with the fewest reported spam calls.

“The prevalence of spam calls has become a significant concern for individuals and businesses alike, impacting productivity, privacy, and overall well-being,” said Al Alof, CEO of Chicksx.com. “While advancements in technology offer solutions such as call-blocking apps and legislation targeting robo-callers, the persistent nature of this issue underscores the need for continued vigilance and innovation.”
