Indiana man arrested for alleged threat to U.S. Naval Academy

CHESTERTON, Ind.—A Chesterton man was arrested on Friday for allegedly sending an online threat directed at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Jackson Fleming, 23, was taken into custody on Sept. 12, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana. He is suspected of making the threat on Sept. 11 through a social media application.

A complaint was approved by a magistrate judge on Sept. 14, charging Fleming with one count of transmitting a threat in interstate communication. If formally charged and convicted, he could face a maximum of five years in prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized that a complaint is not evidence of guilt, and formal charges must follow.

The investigation is a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), with assistance from the Porter County Sheriff’s Office. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the Northern District of Indiana and the District of Maryland.
