Gas prices decline nationwide as winter gasoline enters market

BALTIMORE, MD—The average price of gasoline in the United States has fallen by 3.6 cents in the past week to $3.12 per gallon, according to a new report from GasBuddy. The decline comes as most of the nation begins its transition to cheaper winter-blend gasoline.

The national average is now 1.8 cents lower than a month ago and 2.8 cents lower than this time last year. The national average price of diesel also decreased by 2.6 cents, now standing at $3.658 per gallon.

“The good news is that the transition to cheaper winter gasoline begins tomorrow across most of the nation, and with improvements underway in the West Coast market, I expect that average gas prices will continue to decline in the weeks ahead in most states — assuming hurricane season remains quiet,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

While most states saw prices fall, some areas on the West Coast experienced significant increases due to regional infrastructure issues. Oregon and Washington saw some of the largest weekly increases, at +21.5 cents and +20.7 cents, respectively. California, Washington, and Hawaii continue to have the highest average gas prices in the country.

Meanwhile, the states with the lowest average prices were Mississippi ($2.68), Oklahoma ($2.73), and Arkansas ($2.75).

The most common price for gasoline in the U.S. remained unchanged at $2.99 per gallon.

Oil prices saw little change last week as markets reacted to a call from President Trump for NATO countries to impose further sanctions on and stop purchases of Russian crude oil. WTI crude oil was up 31 cents to $63 per barrel, while Brent crude oil was up 18 cents to $67.17 per barrel.
