TOWSON, MD—Towson University has been named the No. 1 public university in Maryland by Washington Monthly, which also included the school on its inaugural list of “Best-in-Class Colleges” for its commitment to student success, affordabilit0, and public service.
The “Best-in-Class” list recognizes 25 universities nationwide that place students and the public good at the core of their mission.
“This recognition affirms TU’s impact as an engine of opportunity for our students,” said university President Mark R. Ginsberg. “At TU, we’re doing more than just helping students earn a degree. We’re providing a life-changing education and preparing America’s next generation of leaders for the public good.”
The publication praised Towson for its high graduation rate, noting that its students graduate at a rate 11% higher than peers with similar family incomes and academic preparation. The magazine also highlighted the university’s commitment to public service and affordability.
In its overall national rankings of “Best Colleges for Your Tuition (and Tax) Dollars,” Washington Monthly ranked Towson University No. 68 among all U.S. institutions and No. 15 among master’s universities. The rankings evaluated 1,421 colleges based on a range of criteria, including graduation rates, student loan debt and community engagement.
“TU students achieve at rates well above national averages. This is more than a point of pride; it’s a reflection of our unwavering commitment to student success,” said Melanie Perreault, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.
Towson University was also ranked No. 2 in Maryland on the magazine’s “Best Bang for Your Buck” list for its success in helping non-wealthy students earn affordable degrees. The university was ranked No. 28 in the Northeast region on the same list.
