Gas prices tick higher nationwide

BALTIMORE, MD—The national average price for a gallon of gasoline has seen a slight increase over the past week, rising to $3.16 per gallon, according to GasBuddy data.

The average price is up 0.3 cents from last week and 3.1 cents from a month ago, but remains 6.1 cents lower than a year ago. The average price of diesel also rose, increasing 1.9 cents to $3.684 per gallon.

GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, noted that most states saw an increase in prices, while some in the Great Lakes region saw relief after a refinery in Indiana resumed operations following a temporary outage.

“GasBuddy counts 17 states with average prices below $3 per gallon — fewer than we’ve seen in recent months,” De Haan said.

He added that West Coast states like California, Oregon, and Washington could see continued increases due to seasonal refinery maintenance, but that the increases may be short-lived with the transition to winter gasoline on the horizon.

Oil prices are also finding support, with WTI crude oil up $1.25 per barrel to $63.12 and Brent crude up $1.29 to $66.79 per barrel. This follows an announcement from OPEC+ that it will increase oil production in October.

The states with the lowest average prices were Mississippi ($2.69), Oklahoma ($2.69), and Texas ($2.72). The highest prices were found in California ($4.57), Hawaii ($4.41), and Washington ($4.39).
