Powerball jackpot soars to $1.8 billion, second-largest in U.S. history

BALTIMORE, MD—The Powerball jackpot for Saturday’s drawing has been raised to an estimated $1.8 billion, making it the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history.

The new jackpot estimate, announced Friday, is an increase from the previously stated $1.7 billion. The lump sum cash value is an estimated $826.4 million. The largest Powerball jackpot on record was $2.04 billion, won in California in November 2022.

The drawing, the 42nd since the jackpot was last won on May 31, will be broadcast live from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee at 10:59 p.m. ET.

“Excitement is building as players look forward to tomorrow night’s drawing for this historic jackpot,” said Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO. “We encourage everyone to play responsibly and take pride in knowing that every $2 ticket also helps support good causes in their community.”

If a player wins, they can choose between the annuitized prize of $1.8 billion, paid out over 30 years, or the lump sum cash option. Both amounts are before taxes.

The current jackpot run has already produced 101 tickets worth $1 million or more and over 1,000 tickets worth $50,000 or more.

Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. More than half of all proceeds from ticket sales remain in the jurisdiction where they are sold.

Since its first drawing in 1992, the Powerball game has generated more than $36 billion for good causes supported by U.S. lotteries.
