Baltimore man sentenced to 10 years for armed robberies, carjacking

BALTIMORE, MD—A Baltimore man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in two armed commercial robberies and a carjacking in November 2022, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced.

U.S. District Judge Ellen L. Hollander sentenced John Hyman, 21, of Baltimore, followed by three years of supervised release. Co-defendant Devin Grimes previously received a 10-year sentence.

According to his guilty plea, Hyman and two other men committed the crimes on Nov. 29, 2022. They entered a 7-Eleven store in East Baltimore, where one of the men brandished a handgun while they robbed the cash register. Unbeknownst to them, the stolen money contained a tracker, which alerted police and allowed them to follow the suspects.

The tracker led police to a Stokos carry-out restaurant about 0.6 miles away. At the restaurant, the group carjacked a delivery driver, stealing his keys and also taking money from the register. Baltimore City and County police departments dispatched officers and aviation units to locate the suspects.

Aviation units located two vehicles traveling together that matched the tracker’s movements. The vehicles separated as they attempted to flee, but law enforcement apprehended Hyman and the two co-defendants. A loaded Smith & Wesson firearm was recovered during the arrests.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Kelly O. Hayes announced the sentence with officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) – Baltimore Field Division, the Baltimore County Police Department (BCPD), and the Baltimore Police Department (BPD).
