MIDDLE RIVER, MD—At its legislative meeting on Tuesday, September 2, the Baltimore County Council passed legislation sponsored by Councilman David Marks that restricts industrial uses in the MD 43 overlay zone near the Greenleigh community.
The legislation blocks roll-on/roll-off dumpster processing facilities, truck parking, and power plants in the MD 43 overlay district closest to residential neighbors.
“There are established businesses that were operating before the Greenleigh community was built, and they should absolutely be permitted to remain in operation,” said Councilman Marks. “We are concerned, however, by the possible influx of new industrial uses that will disrupt the residential community and create more truck traffic on corridors like Earls and Ebenezer Roads.”
Josh Sines, the president of the Essex-Middle River Civic Council, testified in favor of the legislation on behalf of the organization.
“We are working to find new connections to Bengies Road that will take traffic off local roads,” Sines added. “Until that happens, we need to be very careful of adding intense uses in this area.”
Marks thanked Sines and Greenleigh leaders such as Tamara Gunter and Asa Johnson for their support as well. “Anyone who cares about increase truck traffic and the needs of the Greenleigh community really should have spoken in support of this bill,” Marks concluded.
The legislation blocked at least one proposed trucking facility and a power plant from being constructed in the MD 43 overlay district.
