BALTIMORE, MD—The Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $1.3 billion for the Wednesday drawing, fueling a number of significant wins in Maryland over the past week, the Maryland Lottery announced.
According to a lottery news release, eight of the 24 big-money tickets sold or redeemed in the state were from the multi-state Powerball game. These wins, which occurred in the seven days ending Aug. 31, include a $500,000 winner in Middle River and a $150,000 winning ticket in Garrett County.
The $500,000 prize came from the Double Play option, which allows players to enter a second drawing for an additional $1. The ticket for the Aug. 25 Double Play drawing was sold at a retailer in the Middle River area.
Six other tickets worth $50,000 were sold in College Park, Elkridge, Forestville, Gaithersburg, Severn, and Stevensville.
In the most recent Powerball drawing on Sept. 1, not included in the weekly tally, another $150,000-winning ticket was sold at Gray’s Market in Marbury, and two $50,000 winners were sold at a Royal Farms in Essex and a Wawa in Cockeysville.
The current Powerball jackpot, which has an estimated cash value of $589 million, has been rolling since it was last won in California on May 31. Since then, Maryland players have won 27 prizes of $50,000 or more, purchasing a total of $41.1 million in Powerball tickets and winning $10.1 million in prizes.
The last time a Maryland player won the Powerball jackpot was on Jan. 20, 2021, when a $731.1 million ticket was sold at Coney Market in Lonaconing. That prize was claimed by an anonymous winner.
