Maryland among top 10 U.S. states where private schools are gaining traction

BALTIMORE, MD—Maryland has the fifth-highest rate of private school enrollment in the U.S., according to a new study from e-learning platform eLearning Industry.

The study, which analyzed 2023 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), found that Maryland had 46.14 private school enrollments for every 100 public school enrollments in grades 9-12. This figure is 51% higher than the national average of 30.55.

Maryland recorded 125,070 private school enrollments compared to 271,062 public school enrollments for the 2023 school year.

According to a spokesperson from eLearning Industry, the state’s high ranking reflects “steady interest in private education, particularly in the Washington, D.C. metro region.”

“Parents often cite rigorous academics and college-prep curricula as motivating factors for choosing private schools,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

The study calculated its rankings by determining the ratio of private to public school enrollments in grades 9-12 to identify where private education has a relatively strong foothold.
