BALTIMORE, MD—The Maryland State Police are stepping up enforcement efforts over the Labor Day weekend, urging motorists to drive safely and avoid impaired, distracted and aggressive driving.
According to a press release, troopers from all 23 barracks across the state will conduct high-visibility patrols from Friday, Aug. 29, through Sunday, Aug. 31. The State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) team, a specialized unit focused on identifying impaired drivers, will also be on the road to help reduce alcohol-related crashes, injuries and fatalities.
The police initiatives are part of a statewide effort to prevent dangerous driving behaviors and save lives. This will include working with other law enforcement agencies to conduct patrols and community outreach.
High-visibility enforcement will be concentrated on major roadways across the state, including U.S. Routes 13, 50, and 301 on the Eastern Shore; interstates 495, 70, and Maryland 210 in the central region; and interstates 81, 70, and U.S. Routes 40 and 65 in the western part of the state.
Troopers in the northern region will focus on U.S. Route 40 and Maryland 272, which are areas with a higher number of impaired driving crashes. In Southern Maryland, patrols will be visible along U.S. Route 50, interstates 97 and 695.
The increased enforcement efforts are funded by the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office. The SPIDRE team is funded by a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office.
