Labor Day weekend ranked among most dangerous holidays for drivers

SACRAMENTO, CA—Labor Day weekend, a traditional last hurrah of summer, consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous holidays for drivers, according to the National Safety Council.

Data from the council shows 466 people died in traffic crashes during the 2022 Labor Day holiday period. A key factor in the danger is alcohol, with 39% of Labor Day traffic deaths involving an alcohol-impaired driver, according to the press release from AutoAccident.com.

“The accidents during holiday weekends are always the most devastating,” said Edward A. Smith, a personal injury lawyer at AutoAccident.com. “People are relaxed, maybe they’ve had a few drinks, driving roads they don’t normally take. A lot get caught completely off guard.”

Smith and his firm released a list of safety insights to help families avoid common risks during the busy travel weekend. The tips focus on preparation and awareness.

Before leaving, Smith recommends travelers check their vehicles for proper tire pressure, fluid levels and battery health. He also advises timing departures to avoid peak traffic, suggesting early Friday morning or late Friday night as alternatives to Friday afternoon.

Other safety tips for the road include:

  • Check road conditions: Be aware of different weather patterns or road conditions at your destination.
  • Plan rest stops: Schedule breaks every two hours to combat drowsy driving.
  • Download offline maps: Cell service can be unreliable in some areas, so having a backup navigation system is crucial.
  • Pack an emergency kit: Include water, snacks, phone chargers and basic tools.

Finally, Smith stresses the importance of seeking immediate medical attention after an accident, even if you feel fine, as adrenaline can mask serious injuries.

“A little preparation can be the difference between great memories and a life-changing tragedy,” Smith said.
