Unscheduled mosquito spraying to occur in parts of Baltimore County this week

BALTIMORE, MD—The Maryland Department of Agriculture will conduct unscheduled mosquito control spraying in parts of Baltimore County on Wednesday, Aug. 27, in response to public health concerns about mosquito-borne diseases.

Ultra-low volume (ULV) truck-based spraying is planned for the evenings in Dundalk near the intersections of Mt. Olive Road and Authority Drive, and in Middle River near the intersections of Clarks Point Road and Carolwood Road.

Spraying will begin after 7:30 p.m. and will be rescheduled for the next available evening in the event of inclement weather. Any existing spray exemptions in the affected areas will be temporarily suspended.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) will use a permethrin-based solution, which has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in public health mosquito control programs. While the EPA has determined the product poses no “unreasonable risks to human health,” the MDA recommends that residents avoid outdoor activities during spraying as a precaution.

The MDA also advises residents to take personal protective measures to reduce exposure to mosquito bites, including wearing long, loose-fitting clothing and insect repellent, and avoiding outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Residents can also help control mosquito populations by regularly cleaning bird baths and pet water bowls and by removing or emptying all standing water from containers around their property.

For more information, residents can call the MDA’s Mosquito Control Program at 410-841-5870.
