OWINGS MILLS, MD—The Maryland Cycling Classic, America’s top one-day professional cycling race, will be broadcast live and exclusively across the region by Maryland Public Television (MPT) on Saturday, September 6.
The network will provide up to nine hours of live coverage on MPT-HD, its livestream, and the free PBS app. The broadcast will showcase the prestigious race, which for the first time will feature both men’s and women’s competitions.
The event is a UCI ProSeries international cycling race, and this year’s course will be entirely within Baltimore city limits, covering a 17.9-mile circuit. Both the men’s and women’s races will begin at the Harbor Point District’s Central Plaza and finish on East Pratt Street at the Inner Harbor.
The women’s race, consisting of four laps for a total of 71.6 miles, is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. The men’s race, at six laps for a total distance of 107.4 miles, will start at 12:30 p.m. MPT’s coverage will continue through the men’s race finish and the awards ceremony, which is estimated to conclude around 4:30 p.m.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has indicated that he expects approximately 100,000 spectators to cheer on the competitors citywide. The race is expected to be watched by more than 650,000 people on livestream and seen by over 20 million people worldwide.
The Maryland Cycling Classic attracts top cyclists from around the world, including Tour de France participants, world champions, and Olympians from 30 countries. The Benin National Team is slated to make history as the first African female national team to participate in a major American pro road race.
MPT’s live coverage will begin at 8 a.m. with a 30-minute preview show hosted by sports broadcaster Jim Hunter. Reporters Sue Kopen, Nancy Yamada, and Charles Robinson will provide features, while former professional cyclist Fred “Fast Freddie” Rodriguez will offer pre-race analysis.
The Maryland Cycling Classic is hosted by the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland. The race was last held in 2023, as the 2024 event was cancelled following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.
