BALTIMORE, MD—For the first time in three weeks, the national average price of gasoline has risen, increasing 3.4 cents to $3.12 per gallon, according to a GasBuddy report released Monday.
The increase comes after storms temporarily knocked the largest refinery in the Midwest offline, causing prices to jump sharply in Ohio (+32.5¢), Wisconsin (+23.5¢), and Michigan (+19.8¢).
“The national average saw a modest increase over the last week after storms temporarily knocked the Midwest’s largest refinery offline in Indiana, triggering sharp jumps in gas prices across Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
De Haan noted that while wholesale prices are showing some late-week relief as the refinery restarts, prices could soon rise in Illinois and Indiana as well. Meanwhile, Florida saw the nation’s largest weekly decline, with prices dropping 13 cents per gallon.
Oil prices remain relatively stable, but De Haan said the biggest wildcard remains shifts in the Russia-Ukraine war. He expects moderate gas price fluctuations for the time being, with the potential for lower prices in the fall.
The GasBuddy report, which compiles data from over 12 million price reports at more than 150,000 gas stations, also noted that the national average price of diesel has decreased 2.0 cents in the last week to $3.651 per gallon.
States with the lowest average prices for gasoline include Oklahoma ($2.62), Mississippi ($2.66), and Louisiana ($2.68). The highest average prices are in California ($4.50), Hawaii ($4.36), and Washington ($4.35).
