BALTIMORE, MD—A man from North Carolina and his mother from Parkville each won a $50,000 top prize from the Maryland Lottery’s Bonus Match 5 game. The son bought two tickets with the same numbers, one for himself and one for his mother.
The winners claimed their prizes on consecutive days, with the son collecting his winnings on Aug. 18 and his mother on Aug. 19.
The North Carolina man, a construction worker, bought the tickets on Aug. 4 while on his way to visit his mother in Parkville. He stopped at the Speedy Convenience Store at 7101 Darlington Drive and purchased two Bonus Match 5 tickets, each with the same three number combinations, valid for seven consecutive drawings.
“I bought one for me and one for mom,” he said, explaining his decision to fill out two separate play slips.
Both tickets won the top prize in the very first drawing on the night of Aug. 4. Upon discovering the win, the son said, “I just remained calm and chilled.” He then shared the exciting news with his mother.
The Parkville mother, who is retired, stated she also remained calm upon hearing the news. She revealed that she has been playing the same numbers for years but couldn’t recall their significance.
“I have been playing those numbers for years. I can’t remember how it got started,” she said.
When asked about her plans for the winnings, the Baltimore County resident said she might buy a car but is “in no particular hurry.” Her son remains undecided on how he will spend his winnings.
