BALTIMORE, MD—Maryland’s workforce saw an increase of 11,700 jobs in July, with gains in the private sector and a significant boost in the public sector, according to new data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The state’s private sector added 900 jobs for the month, while the public sector grew by 10,800 jobs. The public sector growth was driven by an increase of 10,200 local government jobs and 1,100 state government jobs. However, Maryland lost another 500 federal government jobs in July, continuing a trend of federal workforce decline.
Despite the overall job gains, Maryland’s unemployment rate saw a slight increase, rising from 3.3% to 3.4% in July.
Job Gains and Losses by Sector
The sectors with the most significant job growth in July were:
- Government (+10,800 jobs)
- Private Educational Services (+1,700 jobs)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,300 jobs)
- Retail Trade (+600 jobs)
- Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation (+500 jobs)
Conversely, the sectors with the largest estimated job losses were:
- Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities (-1,500 jobs)
- Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services (-1,100 jobs)
- Construction (-500 jobs)
- Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (-300 jobs)
- Other Services (-300 jobs)
