MONKTON, MD—The Harford County Health Department confirmed Friday that a groundhog found in the Monkton area tested positive for the rabies virus. The confirmation came from the Maryland Department of Health on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
The rabid groundhog was discovered near the 3500-block of Jarrettsville Pike in Monkton, potentially exposing individuals and pets in the surrounding vicinity. While simply seeing a groundhog is not a cause for concern, anyone who believes they or their pets may have had contact with a groundhog in this area is urged to contact the Harford County Health Department at 410-877-2300 for follow-up.
A rabid raccoon was confirmed in Harford County earlier this month.
Officials are reminding Harford County residents of several precautions to protect themselves and their animals from rabies:
- Always keep pets leashed during walks and closely supervise them in backyards.
- Ensure all cats, dogs, and ferrets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations through their veterinarian or local vaccination clinics.
- Secure trash cans with tight-fitting lids and avoid leaving pet food outdoors.
- Refrain from feeding, petting, or interacting with any wildlife.
- Report stray animals exhibiting abnormal behaviors, such as unusual affection, aggression, lethargy, or disorientation, to Harford County Animal Control at 410-638-3505.
