BALTIMORE, MD—The Maryland Department of Health this week announced it will host its annual “Let’s Talk Tech” event on Aug. 18, highlighting the state’s commitment as a “Technology First State” for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The virtual event, running from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will showcase a range of technologies designed to support greater independence.
The event will feature demonstrations of various assistive technologies, from simple weighted utensils to advanced 3-D printing and remote support systems. Maryland residents can register to attend online here.
“The Department envisions a future where all Marylanders find fulfillment and meaning in every aspect of their lives,” said Maryland Secretary of Health Dr. Meena Seshamani. “Assistive and remote technologies are essential in reaching these goals by supporting greater independence and improving the quality of life for this population.”
Maryland was designated a “Technology First State” on Aug. 15, 2022, becoming the eighth state to launch the initiative. This designation emphasizes the use of technology to empower citizens with disabilities. The Department of Health’s Developmental Disabilities Administration has hosted an annual event since the proclamation to raise awareness about available assistive technology and remote support services.
Marlana R. Hutchinson, Deputy Secretary for the Developmental Disabilities Administration, said the event offers a valuable chance to highlight the advantages of using and understanding technology.
“Our administration is dedicated to enhancing the lives of Marylanders with disabilities and their families, caregivers, and professional support teams,” Hutchinson said.
