Maryland State Police recover drugs, stolen firearm after traffic stop

TOWSON, MD—Maryland State Police arrested a Baltimore man Tuesday morning after a traffic stop in Baltimore County led to the discovery of suspected drugs and a stolen firearm.

Jason Christopher Steptoe, 48, of Baltimore, is charged with multiple firearm offenses, including felony illegal possession of a firearm, as well as driving under the influence and various drug and traffic violations. He is currently being held without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on Aug. 12, 2025, when a trooper from the Maryland State Police Golden Ring Barrack stopped a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe for a traffic violation on southbound Interstate 83 at Ruxton Road. During the stop, the trooper observed signs of impairment and arrested Steptoe for DUI.

A subsequent K-9 scan of the vehicle led to the recovery of a dozen suspected ecstasy pills and a firearm that had been reported stolen from Columbus, Ohio, in 2021.

The investigation is ongoing.
