JFX to close overnight Sunday for subsurface testing

BALTIMORE, MD—A portion of the Jones Falls Expressway (JFX) will be closed in both directions overnight on Sunday, Aug. 17, as crews perform subsurface testing and maintenance work, the Baltimore City Department of Transportation announced.

The full closure of I-83 between North Avenue (Exit 7A) and Cold Spring Lane (Exit 9A) will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday and is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18.

During the closure, northbound traffic will be detoured onto North Avenue, and southbound traffic will be detoured onto Cold Spring Lane. Several entrance ramps to the JFX will also be closed, including the Falls Road ramp to the southbound JFX, both 29th Street ramps, the Cold Spring Lane ramp to the southbound JFX, and the North Avenue ramp to the northbound JFX.

According to the Department of Transportation, a contractor for the Department of Public Works will be conducting a geophysical survey to assess the conditions of rock, soil, and other materials beneath the roadway. Crews will also be removing overhanging trees on the northbound side of the expressway.

Motorists are advised to plan for delays and use alternate routes. Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers, and detour signs will be posted. The Waze app will provide real-time detour navigation.
