Lottery, casinos, sports wagering contribute $1.589 billion to Maryland in FY2025

BALTIMORE, MD—The Maryland Lottery and the state’s various gaming operations generated a combined $1.589 billion for state programs and services in Fiscal Year 2025, which ran from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. This total comes from a combination of lottery profits, casino contributions, and revenue from sports wagering and daily fantasy sports.

The largest portion of this contribution came from the state’s six casinos, which provided $831.3 million. The Maryland Lottery contributed the next-largest amount with $667.2 million in profits. Sports wagering and daily fantasy sports together added another $89.9 million to the total.

According to Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin, the organization’s focus is on generating revenue for the state responsibly. “We focus on fun and games, but we’re serious about the role we play in responsibly generating state revenue,” Martin said.

Lottery, Casinos Drive Contributions

Of the total funds generated, $696.2 million was specifically directed to education programs. On average, the state received $4.35 million per day from these gaming sources.

The Maryland Lottery had its fourth-best year in its 52-year history, with $2.633 billion in sales. Scratch-off tickets accounted for $1.059 billion of that total, marking the fourth consecutive year sales of scratch-offs exceeded $1 billion. Lottery players won a total of $1.673 billion in prizes, which included 33 prizes of at least $1 million.

Maryland’s casinos generated $1.965 billion in revenue, the third-highest total since the program began 15 years ago. Of the casinos’ contributions, $606.2 million went to the Education Trust Fund, which supports various education programs. Since the first casino opened in 2010, the Education Trust Fund has received more than $6.4 billion from casino gaming revenue.

Sports Wagering and Responsible Gaming

The state’s sports wagering market saw significant growth, contributing $88.9 million in FY2025, an increase from $60.3 million in the previous fiscal year. This revenue primarily supports the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which funds public education. A portion of the proceeds from fantasy competitions also went to the Blueprint Fund, totaling $1,049,448.

The state’s Problem Gambling Fund received more than $5.7 million. This money comes from assessments paid by casino operators and expired sports wagering prizes. These funds are used to provide no-cost counseling services for Maryland residents dealing with gambling issues. The Maryland Lottery was also recognized for its responsible gambling efforts, earning the highest level of certification in a verification program sponsored by the National Council on Problem Gambling and the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries.
