Rabid raccoon found in Harford County, health officials warn residents

JARRETTSVILLE, MD—A raccoon found in the Jarrettsville area has tested positive for rabies, according to a confirmation received by the Harford County Health Department on Tuesday. The animal was discovered in the 4000-block of Federal Hill Road.

Health officials are urging residents to be cautious and to contact the department if they or their pets have had any physical contact with a raccoon in the area. The positive test was confirmed by the Maryland Department of Health.

To protect against rabies, the Harford County Health Department offered the following safety tips:

  • Keep pets leashed and closely supervised when outdoors.
  • Ensure all cats, dogs, and ferrets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
  • Securely cover all trash cans and avoid leaving pet food outside.
  • Do not feed, pet, or interact with any wildlife.
  • Report any stray animals exhibiting abnormal behaviors, such as unusual aggression, friendliness, lethargy, or disorientation, to Harford County Animal Control.
