BALTIMORE, MD—Community College of Baltimore County has partnered with Maryland State Sen. Carl W. Jackson to open the CCBC Essex pool for free community swim access through Aug. 15. The initiative, announced Wednesday, aims to address the lack of public swimming facilities in the county.
The temporary solution provides a public option for residents who may not be able to afford private pool memberships. Baltimore County currently offers only private swimming facilities.
“This initiative is about equity, access, and community,” Jackson said. “For too long, Baltimore County has lacked public swimming facilities—an oversight rooted in long-standing historical inequities. By opening the CCBC Essex pool, we are taking a small but meaningful step toward correcting that history.”
CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis echoed the sentiment, stating that the partnership reflects the college’s commitment to public service.
“CCBC is proud to open our doors—and our pool—to the community,” Kurtinitis said. “As a community college, we are deeply committed to providing inclusive access to the resources we have.”
The community swim hours at the CCBC Essex pool are:
- Mondays and Wednesdays: 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
- Tuesdays and Thursdays: 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Special Hours: Aug. 11 and Aug. 13 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The free swim access is available to all Baltimore County residents. Participants must check in and sign waivers within the pool area.
