WASHINGTON—A Texas company is recalling approximately 192,000 KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens after a 23-month-old child died in Oregon from asphyxiation.
Backyard Kids, LLC, of Plano, Texas, announced the recall in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Thursday. The play kitchens’ hooks, used to hold toy accessories, pose a strangulation and asphyxia hazard to young children who may get their clothing caught while climbing on or crawling through the back of the toy.
The recall comes after a 23-month-old child in Oregon died in February 2023 after his shirt became caught on one of the hooks. The manufacturer, KidKraft, Inc., filed for bankruptcy in May 2024. Backyard Kids, which only sold about 400 of the units, has agreed to provide free replacement hooks for all affected play kitchens.
The recalled product, model number 53411, is primarily black and light gray with wood-like countertops. It measures about 44 inches long, 13¾ inches wide and 43 inches high. The model number is located on a sticker on the back of the play kitchen.
The play kitchens were sold online at KidKraft.com, Amazon.com and Walmart.com from 2018 through July 2025 and retailed for between $120 and $270.
Consumers should immediately stop using the play kitchens, remove the original hooks and contact Backyard Kids for free replacement hooks. Backyard Kids can be reached toll-free at 800-882-0234 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or by email at [email protected].
