ANNAPOLIS, MD—Maryland Governor Wes Moore has been elected as vice chair of the National Governors Association (NGA), the only bipartisan national organization representing the nation’s governors. He will serve in this role for the next year before assuming the chairmanship in 2026, succeeding Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt.
“We all want to create a brighter future for our states, and the nation,” Moore said in a statement. “When we get together at the National Governors Association, we’re focused on whether an idea is good, not on where the idea came from. I’m looking forward to collaborating with my fellow governors to build stronger on-ramps to opportunity so every person in our states has a shot at success – no matter how they define it.”
As vice chair, Moore will work closely with Gov. Stitt to lead a series of convenings with governors, private-sector leaders, and other changemakers. Their efforts will advance Stitt’s “Reigniting the American Dream” initiative, a year-long program focusing on three key policy priorities:
- Unlocking economic opportunity: This includes fostering entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic mobility.
- Reimagining education: This aims to expand hands-on learning, career, and technical education.
- Strengthening sustainable energy systems: This involves permitting reform, regulatory clarity, and strategic investment.
Moore will also oversee the NGA’s Center for Best Practices, the organization’s research and development office dedicated to serving governors. His leadership is expected to highlight Maryland’s efforts in public service and inclusive growth while identifying best practices from other state governments that can benefit Maryland.
Founded in 1908, the National Governors Association serves as the collective voice for the leaders of 55 states, territories, and commonwealths.
