Harford County launches new emergency alert system

BEL AIR, MD—Harford County has rolled out a new and improved emergency notification system designed to provide faster and more reliable alerts to its residents, officials announced Thursday.

The new system, dubbed HarfordCoMD Alerts, will deliver real-time notifications for a range of critical events, including severe weather warnings, infrastructure outages, major traffic disruptions, evacuations, shelter-in-place orders, major or localized crimes, and missing persons.

Residents can also opt to receive non-emergency alerts covering public events, hydrant flushing schedules, and street sweeping notifications.

While individuals registered with the county’s previous system, Blackboard Connect, have been automatically transferred, officials are encouraging all citizens to create a new registration. This can be done by texting “HarfordCoMD” to 410-457-3655 or by clicking here. Registration is free and quick, and multiple registrations for the same email or phone number will not result in duplicate messages. The system also allows for the registration of family members or others on their behalf.

“Public safety is the top priority of my administration, and this new system will enhance our ability to give citizens timely and accurate information to protect themselves and their loved ones when disaster strikes,” said Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly. “I encourage everyone to register with HarfordCoMD Alerts and stay safe.”

For questions, residents can contact Alex Hilber at [email protected] or John Richter at [email protected], both with the Emergency Management Division of the Harford County Department of Emergency Services.
