BALTIMORE, MD—A Baltimore City Public Schools board meeting was halted on Tuesday after someone accessed the meeting and displayed “obscene adult content.”
Officials say an unauthorized individual accessed the school system’s board meeting and displayed “antisemitic, racist, and obscene adult content that was deeply offensive, threatening, and inappropriate.”
A message sent to the Baltimore City Public Schools community on Wednesday morning reads as follows:
“Dear City Schools community,
“This is an important follow-up to the disruption of yesterday’s meeting of the Baltimore City Public Schools Board of Commissioners.
“An unauthorized individual accessed our meeting and displayed antisemitic, racist, and obscene adult content that was deeply offensive, threatening, and inappropriate in nature. This appalling act, which is being investigated as a hate crime, undoubtedly impacted and caused harm to members of our school community. We strongly and unequivocally renounce this criminal act.
“At Baltimore City Public Schools, we do not and will not tolerate any forms of hate speech, discrimination, personal attacks, nor any forms of harassment or dehumanizing behavior.
“In immediate response, the meeting was paused as soon as the graphic was detected. The meeting was recessed briefly while our team assessed the implications and determined the safest way to proceed. The meeting continued in-person, and a recording will soon be posted to the City Schools TV channel on YouTube.
“This hate crime is being investigated by Baltimore City School Police in collaboration with the Baltimore Police Department. We are working proactively to establish additional preventive protocols and countermeasures to ensure that the platforms used by our staff and students are secure.
“In our haste to communicate about pausing the meeting, we regret that we failed to acknowledge the harm that the image caused. We take this matter very seriously and are doing everything possible to prevent a similar incident from happening again. Steadfast in our values, we will not allow the malicious actions of any individuals to disrupt the trust we have built with our community. Our commitment remains strong in ensuring City Schools provides a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all our staff, students, and families.”
