BALTIMORE, MD—The national average price of gasoline has resumed a downward trend, falling 1.7 cents over the past week to $3.09 per gallon, according to GasBuddy data released Monday. This marks an 11.5-cent decrease from a month ago and is 37.7 cents lower than a year ago.
Conversely, the national average price of diesel saw a slight increase, rising 1.7 cents in the last week to $3.693 per gallon.
“The national average price of gasoline slipped slightly over the last week, falling alongside oil, which dropped more than $2 per barrel,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. He noted that while the national average remains relatively stable, some states, including Florida, Nebraska, and Indiana, experienced double-digit price increases due to “price cycling,” a phenomenon where prices can fluctuate significantly even with stable wholesale costs.
De Haan anticipates “no major movement in the national average as we approach August,” but warned that states prone to price cycling will likely continue to see more volatile swings.
Oil Market Fluctuations
Oil prices have settled into the mid-to-upper $60 per barrel range. Market activity has been influenced by the European Union’s threat of sanctions against Russia, which could reduce oil supplies, and President Trump’s threat of significant tariffs on countries continuing business with Russia. Economic news, including an 11-month low in new single-family homebuilding starts, also contributed to a modest decline in oil prices last week.
In early Monday trading, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was down 3 cents to $67.31 per barrel, a decrease from $69.19 last Monday. Brent crude oil was down 23 cents to $69.05 per barrel, compared to $71.02 at the start of last week.
Oil and Refined Product Supplies
The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Weekly Petroleum Status Report for the week ending July 11, 2025, indicated a 3.9 million barrel drop in U.S. oil inventories, placing them about 8% below the seasonal average. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) also decreased by 300,000 barrels to 402.7 million.
Gasoline inventories rose by 3.4 million barrels, now slightly above the five-year seasonal average. Distillate inventories increased by 4.2 million barrels but remain approximately 21% below the five-year seasonal average. Refinery utilization dipped 0.8 percentage points to 93.9%, and implied gasoline demand, an EIA proxy for retail demand, fell by 670,000 barrels per day to 8.489 million barrels per day.
